The Space
A vintage Hyderabad bungalow from the Eighties to which two floors have been added since.
The Ask
As the original home was in good condition and the client had an emotional connection to it, the client was hesitant to completely redo the place. They wanted the space to be ecologically sound and reflect the rich history of the bungalow.
The Result
We worked with an architect from Bangalore on this project to make this house a sustainable home.
The striated pattern in the bungalow was both aesthetically novel and thermally beneficial, self-shading the facade from solar radiation. While the structural arrangement of the ground and first floors were largely retained, we made accommodations for new arrangements while never once overlooking the ecological concerns that are a critical part of modern urban living.
Being conscious about their carbon footprint, the clients wanted all material used to be sourced from within a 100 km radius. The rafters we put in were a cosmetic treatment, adding to the ambience. The patterned tiles from Bharat Floorings & Tiles substitute for a rug, contributing to ease of cleaning. The Sainathji artworks in the home resonate with the beliefs of the lady of the house who is a Gujarati, as does the jhoola, ubiquitous to Gujarati homes. Behind the jhoola, light pours in from a small skylight. We only wanted to bring down a cone of light, rather than large swathes of it, which wouldn’t be appropriate for Hyderabad’s hot climate. Much of the furniture is from Intent Made, a Hyderabad-based furniture company. Curtains are from Grandeur Curtains in Mumbai. Accessories and art have been sourced from Hyderabad and its surrounding areas.
In the end, the clients were overjoyed that we were able to create a low-key, fuss-free, personal space, while keeping the home’s ecological impact and rich history intact.
